Speed dating is a formalized matchmaking process which has the purpose of encouraging eligible singles to meet large numbers of new potential partners in a very short period of time. SpeedDating , as a single word, is a registered trademark of Aish HaTorah. Speed dating , as two separate words, is often used as a generic term for similar events. The earliest documented example of speed dating was by Aryeh Alan and Rena Hirsch of Los Angeles in early who developed speed dating as a solution to the problem of typical single events where “only attractive women and outgoing men have success at the end of the evening”.

Usually advance registration is required for speed dating events. Men and women are rotated to meet each other over a series of short “dates” usually lasting from three to eight minutes depending on the organization running the event.

I have four times now witnessed hundreds of people go on hundreds of dates in only a few hours. I’ve then analyzed their post-date opinions about each other, and paired them off. I organized literary speed-dating events at the bookstore where I work. Although I have not been speed-dating myself, organizing and witnessing speed-dating led to some interesting observations and reinforced some trends about courtship. For the uninitiated, this is how Housing Works’ speed-dating works: 35 or so women and 35 or so men sign up for the event, and we set them up based on age and literary interest.

Each participant went on 10 to 14 six-minute dates. Since each woman would not have the opportunity to meet every man, and vice versa, because of the size of the event we also offered a post-official-dating mingle time for people to hit on each other the old-fashioned way. At the end of the night, participants turned in a provided list of all the people of the opposite sex, indicating who they were interested in talking to again. We did one of these events for queer women, but most of them were for straight men and women and most of my observations come from that.

If both participants indicated interest, each received the other’s email address and they’re invited to take it from there.

The event will begin with general orientation to board service geared towards the potential board members.

Participants will learn about what questions to ask when considering joining a board, as well as some high-level expectations common to board service. Finding the right investor for your alternative investment strategy is a challenge. Due to a combination of innovation and efficiency the speed dating format has taken hold as the preferred format for capital introduction events. The format provides investors the opportunity to review a number of strategies in one go. Additionally, these events are explicit in their intention to foster interaction. Yet, when blessed with the opportunity to participate in such a meeting, managers rarely get organized and optimize the precious interaction to the benefit of both manager and investor.

Too often I see that these formats lead to frustration on both sides as managers do not empathize with investors on how to manage the information — meetings a day for a couple days…plus all the social events.

We look forward to seeing you soon! La Brea Ave. Before the main event started, the night began with an intimate chat with Jay Sanderson. I appreciated his candid response to the challenges the Federation faces. For example, we learned about Honeymoon Israel, which helps connect newlyweds or partners in a committed relationship to their Jewish roots by sending them to Israel, even if only one partner is Jewish. We also learned that there are 3, Holocaust survivors living in poverty in L. As we wrapped up, Jay invited each one of us to reach out to him and set up some time to meet him for coffee.

After our time with Jay, the main event began. The timer, projected on screens, was set for five minutes and the buzzer started. From there we had to quickly learn about the organization across from us and they about us! The atmosphere was loud, chaotic, and fun.
